1 Define your niche
The first step to launching your own copywriting freelancing business is to define your niche. What kind of copy do you want to write? Who are your ideal clients? What are their pain points and goals? By narrowing down your focus, you can position yourself as an expert in your field and attract the right kind of projects. You can also charge higher rates and deliver better results for your clients.

Everyone is obsessed with niches. But what if you don't niche down? At least not from the get-go. First, experiment as this will give you more experience and make you a more versatile writer. It will also show you what you like and what you dislike writing about. Eventually, you'll understand where your service-market-fit is. Take my example: I've been writing on several topics, like travel and general technology. But I work in Product, so lately I understood that this is where I should focus on, ghostwriting for product professionals. Would I have come up with this idea when I started out writing? Nope.

2 Build your portfolio
The next step to launching your own copywriting freelancing business is to build your portfolio. Your portfolio is your showcase of your skills and achievements. It should include samples of your best work, testimonials from your clients, and case studies of your results. You can create your own website or use platforms like Contently or Medium to host your portfolio. Make sure to update your portfolio regularly and share it on your social media and networking channels.

Think of your portfolio as the showroom of a car dealership. When you walk onto a car lot, you know there’s plenty of inventory. But the best vehicles are on display inside. There are five or six models at most, spanning the spectrum of their offerings (coupe, sedan, crossover, SUV, etc.). That’s what your portfolio should be. Assuming you offer a variety of services, organize your portfolio by project type and share your best 1-3 projects per service.

3 Market your services
The third step to launching your own copywriting freelancing business is to market your services. You need to make sure potential clients know about your business and the services you offer. To do this, you may consider creating a blog or newsletter to share valuable content and display your expertise. Additionally, joining online communities and forums related to your niche and offering helpful advice and feedback can be beneficial. Furthermore, don't forget to reach out to your existing contacts and ask for referrals or testimonials. You can also pitch to ideal clients via email or social media, offering a free consultation or a sample of your work, as well as using platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer to find projects and bid on them.

Do not underestimate the power of referrals and a personal brand.Build up your personal brand on LinkedIn, and go to events and meet your potential clients in person. It’s amazing how many clients I’ve got simply from knowing the right people.Your personal brand is probably the most important thing when you’re a freelancer. You need to be seen as trustworthy, confident, easy to work with, and valuable.

In my experience where most of copywriters fail is managing projects properly when they start to get more projects. Use tools to keep things smooth. Always set realistic deadlines. Always work on feedback given by clients and take them seriously, they will help you grow like nothing will.

This is crucial. I recommend spending at least 30 minutes a day developing a key skill that will propel your business. When I started freelancing, I learned topography and basic graphic design so I could market myself on Instagram and later LinkedIn. I also learned colour theory, sales techniques and different marketing strategies in the B2B space. The process helped me think visually, stand out as a creative thinker in a crowded marketplace, and turned into a seperate revenue stream.Plus, when I work on marketing teams, the time I spent learning basic graphic design helps me provide creative direction/suggestions to the design team which they find incredibly helpful.

Choose your adventure and focus on exploring the potential until you find success. If you don't know what you want, others will see your talent and present alternatives. But if you know the kind of writer you want to be and the level of success you want to achieve, you can stand firm.
