But here's where it gets controversial: ANSSI's investigation revealed that this vulnerability was not a secret. A 2014 audit had already flagged "serious shortcomings" in the museum's cybersecurity. The heist itself was a bold and well-executed plan. A four-man crew, disguised as construction workers, used a cherry picker to access the Apollo Gallery. In just seven minutes, they shattered glass cases with chainsaws and made off with eight priceless gems, including jewelry once owned by 19th-century Queens.
The thieves' escape was just as daring. They attempted to destroy evidence by torching the cherry picker and fled on scooters.
French authorities have arrested four suspects, three of whom are believed to be directly involved. Investigators suggest these men may have been hired for the job, given their history of theft.
In response, France's Culture Minister Rachida Dati has announced plans to install "anti-ramming" and "anti-intrusion" barriers at the Louvre by the end of the year. Louvre director Laurence des Cars acknowledged a gap in their surveillance coverage, with the thieves' entry point not adequately monitored.
Dati confirmed the internal security systems functioned during the robbery but warned of "major flaws" in external protection.
