Mall Security Guards Assaulted While Stopping Shoplifters (2025)

A shocking incident unfolded at Auckland's Glenfield Mall, leaving three individuals injured in a violent altercation. The story begins with a brave attempt to prevent alleged shoplifting, but it took a dark turn.

Police reports describe a 'violent assault' that occurred last Friday afternoon. Two security guards and a concerned citizen were allegedly attacked by two female suspects attempting to flee the mall with stolen goods. Acting Senior Sergeant Alex Waworis stated, "Three people were violently assaulted while trying to prevent the suspects from leaving. Two of the victims required hospitalization for their injuries."

The suspects, however, didn't get far. Police swiftly tracked them down a short distance from the mall and took them into custody. Waworis expressed relief, saying, "We're glad to have apprehended these alleged offenders and hold them accountable for their actions."

But here's where it gets controversial: while the alleged shoplifted items were returned to the store, the suspects now face charges including aggravated assault.

This incident raises questions about the fine line between self-defense and excessive force. Should those trying to prevent crime be held to a different standard? And what about the role of bystanders in these situations?

What are your thoughts? Do you think the suspects' actions warrant the charges they face, or is there more to this story? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
