First of all, thank you so much for weighing in on our fridge dilemma!

Muffuletta Dip Recipe (1)

Ours is still broken, butI followed the handy-dandy link some of you left in the comment section in last Friday’s post and it took me straight to a PDF of Whirlpool’s “Second Through Fifth Year” refrigerator warranty…something I didn’t even know existed!

Muffuletta Dip Recipe (2)

Itsays, “In the second through fifth years from the date of purchase, when this refrigerator is operated and maintained according to instructions attached to our furnished with the product, Whirlpool Corporation will pay for FSP replacement parts and repair labor costs to correct defects in materials or workmanship in the sealed refrigeration system. These parts are: compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer, and connecting tubing. Service must be provided by a Whirlpool designated service company“.

I called the 1-800 number listed on the warranty and told the woman who answered that we were having trouble with our (year and a half old)fridge. Shequickly started to explain that Whirlpool doesn’t offer any kind of warranty after the first year, so I jumped in and read her the bit about the Second Through Fifth Year Full Warranty. (ahem)

She asked me what exactly was wrong with our fridge, and after I told her the service techs said it needed a new compressor and that the lines were all filled with oil. She told me that their warranty wouldn’t cover any of the sealed refrigeration parts, so I read her the bit about Whirlpool Corporation will pay for replacement parts in the sealed refrigeration system, and that those parts are the compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer and connecting tubing. (ahem)

She went on toexplain that we would have to pay for any labor costs, so I read her the part about Whirlpool Corporation will payfor repair labor costs. (ahem)

And here’s the real kicker: the company that she’s sending out (for $85) on Thursday (S&S) to look at our fridge is the same company that Lowes has already sent out twice ($85 x 2), and who were the ones that determined that our fridge“couldn’t be fixed” in the first place. Isn’t that just crazy?

Anywho- I’ll keep you posted. And, again, THANK YOU SO MUCH to the folks that posted that link to the warranty. Even if we find out the thing is completely dead, I will feel a *little* better knowing we at least tried to get it fixed from every angle we could!

And speaking of cold food,we spent the weekend on Cape San Blas with some of myfamilyfrom Minnesota and my Aunt Chriss made the BEST dip while we were there!

Muffuletta Dip Recipe (3)

She calls it Muffuletta Dip and told me she adapted it from a hoagie dip recipe she found somewhere several years ago. I thought some of y’all might like to try it out too, so I’m posting it here for those that want to give it a whirl!

Muffuletta Hoagie Dip

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour

Total Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Yield: 10 servings

One of my most often requested recipes! Adapted from a hoagie dip recipe Ifound years ago to be exactly as we like it.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. turkey, deli style, oven-roasted - chopped
  • 1/2 lb. salami, any variety - chopped
  • 2 cups Italian blend cheese - shredded
  • 1/2 cup green onion - chopped
  • 4 pepperocini - chopped
  • 1/2 cup green olives - sliced
  • 1/2 cup kalamata olives - sliced
  • 1 cup mayo
  • 1/4 cup Zesty Italian dressing
  • 1/2 t. crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 - 1 cup Roma tomatoes - seeded and chopped

Instructions

  1. Whisk mayo and dressing together in a large bowl.
  2. Add remaining ingredients (except tomatoes) and mix.
  3. Refrigerate for at least an hour to overnight.
  4. Add tomatoes right before serving.
  5. Serve with crackers.
  6. Notes from Aunt Chriss:
  7. Can also be used on buns as sandwich filling.
  8. The olives make the recipe quite salty; no extra salt is needed.
  9. Adjust the mayo/dressing amounts to make as creamy (or not) as you prefer.
  10. I rarely measure exactly for this dip- experiment to make it just the flavor combination your family will ask for again and again!

And speaking of women who really know their way around the kitchen- Kevin’s mom Katie is having her brain surgery tomorrow (Wednesday), and we just wanted you to know how much we appreciate all the kind words you sent and all the prayers you’ve been lifting up for her since I blogged about it last week. She goes to the hospital at 7am and they said the surgery usually takes about 3 hours.I’ll be sure to publish a postabout how she’s doing on Thursday! XO

Oh my goodness, Layla – it’s an uphill climb with warranties and such, isn’t it. Crossing my fingers that whirlpool is able to help you guys! It’s pretty incredible how educated you have to be as a consumer sometimes … even as you’re reading her THEIR warranty, you have to keep pushing! That’s crazy talk!

  2. Muffuletta Dip Recipe (7)Robbin

Prayers for Katie, and her loved ones too. Thank you for posting the 9:00 surgery time–a collective prayer is so uplifting. Bless you all!

Layla did you know there is a Muffuletta restaurant in St. Paul , MN (Como area)! We used to go there when I was a kid and they do have a Muffuletta sandwich that has many of the same ingredients as this dip. Of course Minnesota is the best! Here’s the link: http://muffuletta.com/index.php

There was no other company that Whirlpool could send out? Sounds like their way of getting out of the warranty. Fight as if your life depends on this. Ask for a supervisor. Tell them you write a blog and will let all your readers know not to purchase a Whirlpool refrigerator. They don’t want bad publicity!

    • Muffuletta Dip Recipe (11)Linda L. Barker

I agree with Lori L. It can’t hurt to try, after all word of mouth does have power !!

It seems you made it quite clear yet the woman (reading from her page in the “how to put off the customer” booklet) had something to say for everything. GRRRRR! It seems like you had her on every step! Does sweet Layla ever get a “tude” in situations like this? ;)Kindness usually does the trick but that is maddening. Prayers for Katie and your family tomorrow.

I’m so sorry about the refrigerator. Sure, first world problem, but we do live in the first world and refrigerators are a part of that and this has been time consuming. It’s OK to be frustrated.

  8. Muffuletta Dip Recipe (14)Connie

Just read your refrigerator update on the warranty…..good luck! We purchased a beautiful French Door Electrolux refrigerator about 6 years ago. Never again, we’ve had more service calls on this appliance than on all my other refrigerators in the last 40 years. They just don’t make them like they used to!

  9. Muffuletta Dip Recipe (15)Sarita

I suggest you contact the fridge co. Headquarters and explain your situation….you need to be your own advocate. Prayers for all to go well with your MIL.

First of all: Most importantly, I said a prayer to St. Anthony to find good results/good health for Katie, Kevin’s Mom. I must have missed some posts, I don’t remember her dilemma… Godspeed to Katie with her surgery and stint in the hospital. May she be home soon and, trust me, St. Anthony will find good health for her (I’m Catholic and love the Saints!). And thanks for the post about what to do with a bad refrig/repairs. Geez, isn’t it SAD that we have to keep referring to things, and having to defend ourselves with these huge companies and their inferior products…. Whomever your Followers were to give you that advice/the tips/the wording, well, they are great people to share that with you.
    Best,
    Gloria

I need your attitude! We have S&S working on our dishwasher right now. I had to call Bosch to get it covered as it fell right at the one year mark. They have been out 5 times and it is still not fixed. I want to throw in the towel and say that we tried from every angle, but they keep trying different parts and it is exhausting. Glad to not feel alone.

  15. Muffuletta Dip Recipe (21)Nini

Prayers for Katie, her medical team, and family!!! Believing with you that she will have a full recovering.

Keep after those fridge people Layla! A product should work more than 1 and 1/2 years.

    Praying for Katie!

Its always a scary thing and we pray for comfort and strength for her along with you, Kevin and your family. Best of luck through the surgery and I will be looking forward to an update! My husband said to tell you NOT to give up…
The same exact thing happened to us…only we had to pay over $300. to have someone come out. We were told the money would be refunded if it was in a sealed part. We got a brand new refrigerator and had to fight to get our money we paid refunded but we did, indeed, get it all back. There is a Warranty on those parts and it is fraud if they do not honor it. You should not have to pay a dime. Just keep after it. Honestly, we went through the exact same thing only our refrigerator is a Kenmore Elite.

You probably know this already so I’m just sticking my 2 cents in.

Compressors can be replaced. There are even youtube videos on di-it-yourself (I wouldn’t do it).

The oil in the tubes is funny – the tubes (evaporator and condensor) contain refrigerant, tetraflouroethane, which gets pressurized by the compressor. The refrigerant then takes the heat out of the frig and returns to the compressor. Its a closed system. So either the refrigerant is the oil and its supposed to be there or somehow your refrigerant escaped (its usually a gas so that would be easy) and oil got put in from somewhere (that would be hard, no oil in your refrigerator unless its in the salad dressing).

    Just my opinion

I’m really annoyed by the advertising on your blog lately. A pop up for Mint comes and covers the content. The first time there is an X way up top that you have to hunt for. After opting out, the add returns and there is no X. I’m leaving now with out reading any of it 🙁 I’ve been a follower for years and am sad to not be able to see your posts.

    • Muffuletta Dip Recipe (31)Layla

      Hi Barb!
That definitely shouldn’t be happening, so thank you for the heads up! Are you on an iPad by chance? I’ve never seen an ad cover my blog, but I don’t have an iPad, so I’m guessing it might have something to do with that. ?
