A Tough Lesson for the Saints
The Northampton Saints are determined to learn from their first defeat of the 2025/26 season, a 14-31 loss to the Newcastle Red Bulls in the PREM Cup. This setback, however, is an opportunity for growth and a chance to reflect on the journey ahead.
Director of Rugby, Phil Dowson, shared his insights, emphasizing the value of the experience. "We wanted a strong challenge, and Newcastle certainly brought that," he said. But here's where it gets controversial: Dowson hinted at the impact of injuries, particularly the loss of their fly-half, Anthony Belleau, who had to be replaced before halftime due to a knock.
"We managed the returns of Furbank and Sleightholme, who hadn't played a minute this term, but the second half saw us struggle. We tried too hard, and that's a lesson in itself." Dowson added.
And this is the part most people miss: the Saints' defeat was more than just a loss. It was a learning curve for a young, developing team. With an average age of just over 19, players like Sonny Tonga'uiha, Henry Lumley, and James Pater gained invaluable experience.
"James Bennett, who's been playing university rugby, stood out in the second row. He faced a seasoned Newcastle side and showed heart and determination." Dowson praised.
The Saints are taking their scars and turning them into lessons. As they prepare for their next challenge, a trip to Mattioli Woods Welford Road to face the Leicester Tigers, Dowson believes it's all part of the process. "This tournament is about learning and creating consistency. We'll take what we've learned and apply it to our next performance."
So, what do you think? Is this a valuable lesson for the Saints, or should they have managed the game differently? Let's discuss in the comments!
